Dear Readers,

First of all, may I thank readers who gave feedback on the last newsletter regarding the SCI. It is all apparent that this type of subject has its place in the JPF newsletter, and similar such subjects will be developed upon in forthcoming editions.

This week's newsletter brings to you a number of subjects. We start by looking at a new business and research centre in Montpellier designed to instigate new projects in the field of clean energy.

Top properties this week are an attractive stone house in Monoblet and a well appointed villa near Anduze. Both have wide views across local countryside.

Should you wish to be removed from this mailing list, please use the link provided at the bottom of the page. Otherwise, kindly read on.

Themes of the Fortnight:
DERBI - a meeting place for research, business and external financing in the field of renewable energy

It makes sense that in a region of the world exposed to a good 300 days of sunshine per year, solar energy should be harnessed and put to good use. It is within this context that Montpellier city and the Languedoc Roussillon region as a whole, are expanding facilities for a more extensive use of renewable energy. Beyond the realm of city infrastructures however, important initiatives are ongoing to concentrate skills and efforts and put the region on the renewable energy map. City authorities have thus been instrumental in the creation of DERBI, a grouping of research laboratories and innovative companies. DERBI's role consists in bringing together ideas and skills, sketching out new projects and seeking funding. At the present time it has 122 members; 61 businesses, 21 research centres / laboratories / places of higher education, 29 federations or institutional partners and 11 territorial members. DERBI also plays an important role in the organisation of ENERGAïA, an annual conference held in the city that reaches out to an international audience on the same themes.

Derbi - research and business pole in Montpellier for renewable energy

Montpellier has been interested in sustainable development for over 20 years. It is developing sites that process waste to produce useful energy and the installation of solar panels on all city facilities is currently under study. For the latter, private investment is a complimentary approach to city funding. Urbasolar, which implement "solar roofs" with lightweight flexible solar paneling is among the various companies that currently work under the DERBI umbrella, and likely to see increased involvement across the region.

Mare Nostrum - Montpellier's aquarium - a big success
Mare Nostrum, the new and extensive aquarium facilities, received 70,000 visitors in its first three weeks of operation. Feedings of penguins, sharks and diver excursions into the oceanic shark aquarium tend to draw the biggest crowds. We shall be taking a look in a future newsletter.
