The Fabre museum in
Montpellier will this summer play host to a major international retrospective on Gustave Courbet, organized in association with the New York Metropolitan Museum and the Grand Palais in Paris.

Courbet - Montpellier

In the words of France's official tourism site ...

" ... all of Courbet’s major masterpieces, as well as numerous re-discoveries, have been gathered from public and private collections around the world. This large-scale exhibition pays tribute to an artist whose career was closely related to Alfred Bruyas, the Montpellier collector who later bequeathed one of his most beautiful paintings to his hometown museum.

It was Alfred Bruyas who introduced Gustave Courbet to Montpellier. Spending time in the city in 1854 and in 1857, the artist was inspired by the light, which he considered to be more lively than elsewhere. His paintings included views of the Palavas marshes and fishermen’s cabins, the Ambrussum bridge (vestiges of the via Domitia Roman road) as well as vineyards such as the Tour de Farges domain near Lunel. Little by little, these Languedoc landscapes made their way into international art history.

Unlike Paris and New York, the Montpellier leg of this exhibition takes on a regional nature. The Fabre museum’s permanent collection highlights Courbet’s contributions, showing visitors the link between works in the Bruyas collection and Courbet’s own perspective. While outside, a Courbet route takes visitors on a trip through the Languedoc area in Courbet’s footsteps."

The exhibition will run from
from June 14th to September 28th.

In two weeks we take a look at the work of a local winemaker.
